Gwen Sloan Obituary

Gwen Strate Sloan, 96, peacefully returned home to our Heavenly Father on the morning of December

17, 2022. She was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada on May 12, 1926 to Alfred and Mabel Strate. She

is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh C. Sloan; her parents and her two brothers, and one

grandson. She is survived by her three children, Greg (Irene) Sloan; Julie (Ken) Ewell; Holly (Brian)

Hendrickson; nine beautiful grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson.

Gwen moved to Edmonton, Alberta when she was very young and then to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

After living there several years, the family moved back to Cardston, Alberta and that is where she met

the love of her life, Hugh C. Sloan. They were married on July 25, 1946 in the Cardston, Alberta Temple.

They moved to the States after a couple of years of marriage and settled in Othello, Washington. They

lived there for many years and Gwen’s home was always welcoming to everyone. She loved to entertain

and have friends over for meals.

Gwen loved to sew, needle point, knit, crochet and everyone’s favorite hobby she performed was

making chocolates before the Christmas Holidays. She would make and dip up to 200 pounds of

chocolates each year. Everyone loved them and she loved to box them up and give them as gifts.

She was a great cook, and later in life Gwen and Hugh decided to move to Phoenix, Arizona and open a

cookie shop - Dusty’s Cookies, named after their oldest grandson. They lived in Phoenix for about 10

years and made so many friends and loved the time they spent in Arizona.

In 1993-1994 Gwen and Hugh served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the

Gallup New Mexico, Mission. They loved serving the Lamanite people on the Reservation. It was one of

the highlights of her life.

After they completed their mission, they settled in Springville, Utah. Gwen loved her home and her

neighbors Springville. She was everyone’s friend and everyone always felt welcome in her home.

Gwen was an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, holding

many callings of service throughout her life. Her favorite calling was with the youth and the young

women. She taught the young women many years and loved her time with them. Her greatest calling

of all was to be a devoted, loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was the best of the best! All of

her grandchildren loved her and loved to be around her.

There will be a viewing on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Othello, Washington

LDS Church (611 So 7 th Ave). A short graveside will be right after in the same building (because of the

weather), and then to the Bess Hampton Memorial Cemetery, Othello, Washington.

Gwen spent many of her last days being cared for by the wonderful people at the Charleston Senior

Living Center in Cedar Hills, Utah, and A Plus Hospice Care in Orem, Utah. We want to thank these

people for all the time, love and care they gave to our mother. She loved each and every one of them.
